The Gaza Envelope

About the area

The Gaza envelope refers to the Israeli communities located near the border with the Gaza Strip, an area that has faced significant security challenges over the years due to its proximity to the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Residents of the Gaza envelope often live under the constant threat of rocket fire, with frequent escalations of violence leading to evacuations and the need for bomb shelters. Despite these challenges, the communities in the region are known for their resilience and strong sense of solidarity. Efforts are made to maintain normal daily life, with a focus on agriculture, education, tourism and community building, while coping with the ever-present security concerns.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched an unprecedented and brutal terror attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip, targeting communities near the Gaza border. The attack began with an extensive rocket barrage, tragically impacting a music festival and followed by waves of armed militants entering Israeli towns and military posts. These groups inflicted significant violence, including shootings at civilian gatherings, kidnappings, and the tragic loss of numerous lives. Many Israeli civilians lost their lives and 251 were taken hostage. The unexpected scale of the assault challenged Israeli security forces, resulting in widespread impact and loss. In response, Israel declared a state of war, initiating airstrikes on Gaza aimed at Hamas infrastructure and leadership.

Following the destruction and hardship of the October 7th “Iron swords” war, we remain hopeful that the area will be rebuilt and that the future will bring, once again, renewed stability and prosperity, allowing the region to further develop its agricultural, tourism, and communal strength, fostering a brighter future for its residents.

The Gaza Envelope Top Highlights

The Nova Memorial site

This site stands as a tribute to the victims of the tragic Nova music festival, symbolizing a place of reflection and remembrance. Located near the site of the festival, it serves as a poignant reminder of the loss suffered during the violent events on the October 7th brutal attack by Hamas terrorists. The memorial offers a peaceful space where visitors can honor the memories of those who lost their lives, while also fostering a sense of resilience and hope. Through its design and setting, the Nova Memorial seeks to promote healing and unity, encouraging visitors to reflect on the importance of peace and the enduring strength of the human spirit.

The Burnt vehicles compound

Following the events of October 7th, Israel established a Burnt Vehicles Compound to collect and document the remains of vehicles destroyed during the devastating Hamas attack. Many of these vehicles belonged to civilians who were caught in the assault, as well as security forces responding to the crisis. The compound serves as a chilling testament to the brutality of that day, preserving evidence for investigations and historical record-keeping. It has also become a site of national mourning, symbolizing both the tragic losses and the resilience of the Israeli people.

The Scouts' Monument

The Scouts' Monument near Nahal Oz is a significant site overlooking the Gaza border, offering a strategic and historical viewpoint of the region. It provides visitors with a panoramic view of both Israeli and Gazan landscapes, highlighting the proximity and tensions that define life in the area. On October 7th, The Nahal Oz post, located near Kibbutz Nahal Oz in the northern Gaza Strip, was one of the first one to be stricken by the attack. At the post, more than 50 male and female soldiers were killed, including 15 female scouts. Just a stone's throw from the base, the parents of the murdered scouts erected a monument in their memory. The monument is located at a lookout point on the sector that the lookouts were responsible for, opposite to the city of Gaza. In the monument a pergola was erected and, along the road leading up to the pergola you pass between stones with pictures of the girls and their names. Following the October 7th attack, the site gained further significance as a testament to resilience in the face of ongoing threats. It serves as a place for remembrance, and a deeper understanding of the complex reality along Israel’s southern frontier.
